The meme is here: Give me the names of two characters and I will tell you why character A loves character B.

Here are [personal profile] rix_scaedu's and [personal profile] kelkyag's first prompts. Doug and Fridmar are from Addergoole; Cxaidin and Zizny from Dragons Next Door. To quote Zizny in an earlier piece:

"For a grown adult dragon, the pronoun is 'thez.'"

"Theza" is the possessive.

Doug and Agmund Fridmar

Some people went into battle like a well-oiled machine. Doug's father, for example; he moved with sparse, sharp movement, did what needed to be doing, and drank afterwards with the same mechanical precision.

Some people fought like it was sex: with ridiculous intensity, angry, wild, some strikes almost like caresses, some like orgasms. Of the Thorne Girls, Massima fought the most like that, and she fucked like she fought. Afterwards, she drank as if she was going to take the bottle to bed with her, too. Sometimes Doug felt as if he envied the bottle, and other times he pitied it.

But so very few people fought like a dance, like every move had a place and yet was beautiful. So few people fought such that you could choreograph your movements around theirs and they would notice and do the same right back at you.

Agmund Fridmar, big, fierce, bearish Agmund, fought like a ballet, like a symphony, like a dance, and afterwards, when they drank, his movements had the same precision.

Once, once, Doug had thought of an old and awful quote on dancing bears: "The marvel is not that the bear dances well, but that the bear dances at all."

That proverb had it wrong, Doug was sure. The marvel of Agmund Fridmar was definitely in how well the Bear danced.

Cxaidin and Zizny

Zizny had fire.

In a literal sense, of course, all dragons had fire. It was their birthright, their gift, their curse.

But dragons were a long, long-lived race, one of the oldest, and they tended, after a few times of setting their nest alight, to be calmer, more thought-out creatures than their flamey breath would suggest.

Zizny was not calm.

Zizny questioned resolutely. Not only the assumptions of others, not only the writings of dragons and other-creatures of the past, but theza own assumptions, theza own truths. Zizny would ask one day why the sun was rising as it always had, and then the next day ask exactly why the dragons got along with humans - or, perhaps, why they shouldn't get along better with said humans. Thez would question the entire stork arrangement and then snarl at a passing centaur for some comment about dragon history and its habit of going up in smoke.

(This did happen, sadly, but most of the very important dragon records were carved in stone or etched in metal. Very heat-durable metal).

Cxaidin loved Zizny's fire, the sparks that seemed to fly off whenever Zizney was involved in a new quest, the way thez made Cxaidin question even thezself. Above all, and after all, and in spite of all, Cxaidin loved Zizny's heat.

Fighting like a dance, and able to include other dancers on the fly. Neat! I'm put in mind of when I used to be a performance drummer, and there were occasions where we played something that wasn't quite musical drums (in the musical chairs sense), in that nobody lost their drum. But sometimes you ended up with two people on one drum for a while, and one of the other performers was a joy to work with that way.

Those sorts of sparks are fun to watch, but occasionally even those sorts of sparks can start an uncontrolled conflagration. At which point, an actual fire is probably more predictable and almost always more controllable.

<nod> That I remember from the recent AU Luke thread. But Will's not a daeva like Mike is?

You are also not obliged to answer every comment. :)

So, is will some other flavor of succubus, or does being descended from Mike count?

Tangentially ... are individual powers (not word strengths) more standardized/similar in the three "fullbreed" types than they are in halfbreeds? The recent bit with Peltier suggested that "seer" is not a power that shows up in fullbreeds. I suppose I should ask that there ...

Supernatural beauty and intelligence.

**edit: Kailani is ALMOST a purebred Grigori but she has a pattern-recognition/analysis ability which "taints" her bloodline because the Children of the Law are huge snobs.

Don't all fae get supernatural beauty? Or is that about Grigori changes? (I don't remember if I've seen a description of one.) I guess masking is a different flavor of magic.

Oh lordy, no. Most are born as above-average attractiveness humans but some Changes are definitely more supernatural ugly than beauty. Melchior's a goblin, for example, Brenna got horrifying pirranha (how DO you spell that) teeth, etc.

Regine is a Grigori.

Regine is a Grigori.

I have very little idea of what Regine looks like -- female and dresses well/upper class, and that's about it.

Tall, blonde, Dutch, and stylish -- but not so good looking as to distract from the handsome young'un behind her until she starts talking -- and possibly doing some sort of mind working to keep everyone's attention during her speech?

So grigori "supernatural beauty" is ... easily outshone by a near-daeva? They just don't need to mask because their changes don't take them obviously outside the human range?

How wide a range of appearances does standard masking give? IIRC the user can tune their apparent age, but if there are more options than that to twiddle "what you would look like if you hadn't changed", I've missed them.

That's throwing out a lot of potential powers that don't seem to be replicable with the magic system. Admittedly, some of them seem junky, but some of them are rather potent ...

That's exactly why Regine started Addergoole! A big part, at least. Breed new, interesting powers and train them.

If the recent-ish snippet with Cya attempting to hire another Finder away from Regine is any example, the "train them" part is not being well-executed.

Ha, yes. Not by Regine herself, at least. And based on the number of cy'Luca casualties in the apoc, not as well by Luke as he probably would like, either... But they "won" the war, which was Regine's aim, so I guess after that happens, she wouldn't care as much* about the training as the research angle.

* this my personal speculation

For fairly pyric values of "won", though I'm not sure doing all that much better was a possible, at least without a much more coordinated response drawing in a whole lot more people.

Pft. Trying to figure out what a power could do without training and practice is ... collecting fractional data, at best.
