Interlude: Doug
by Lyn Thorne-Alder

“Your daughter…!”

Doug looked up from his book, feeling his Masked stubs of swings flaring out in response to his father’s obvious anger.  “Niassa?”

Of course Niassa.  He only had one child at the school at the moment – his second, which made two more than his father’d had here so far – and of his three children, only one of them was a daughter.

A sequel to a feral cat-girl and Here, Kitty, Kitty

“Easy, easy, shit, easy.” Luke almost lost his hold on the girl as she did her best to scramble out of his hands, over him, and onto the dog-boy. Or, at least, he was pretty sure that’s where she was going. Mike, on the other hand, shouted a Working so fast that his words blurred together and so loudly they might have heard it back at Addergoole, and the dog-boy fell asleep.

Almost abashed, Luke remembered he could do Workings, and, in a much quieter, much more soothing tone, did a Calm Down working on the cat-girl. “Easy, easy. Okay. There.” She was looking at him, sleepy now but definitely calm. “Okay. So, do you understand me?”

She shook her head no. Luke managed not to laugh in her face.

“Do you have a name?”

She had to think about that. After a moment, she offered “Cat.”

“Well, that’s a label, at least. Hello, Cat. I’m Luke.”

After Exclamation Points. Sword/Lady timeline, so maybe 50-75 years after the apocalypse, probably canon.

When Luke got back to Addergoole with Heraclea, Patronus, and the kids — Mike had shown up after two days with a teleporter and a clairvoyant, looking miffed and clearly trying to hide a worried expression — he sent Cynara a fruit basket full of the most exotic fruits Addergoole’s magical greenhouses could grow, a brief note telling her who he’d found, and what he’d rescued them from, and copies of all of Addergoole’s most recent survey maps of North America.

She sent him back one of the maps — Texas-area, he noted, where the third of her original “trouble spots” had been — with eight color-coded dots listed as “need rescue or help, soon; might be in trouble in the next year; they’re doing something hinkey, keep an eye on; and “you might want to deputize.”

Along with that was a list of three other people who might be interested in helping him rescue or check on alumni — all of them Addergoole grads and two of them people Luke had enjoyed teaching — along with their locations and a note that said if you don’t have a teleporter, I can loan you one.

Luke might have thought she was trying to keep him occupied, distracted even, but by the time he got her package, he had already gone to the second spot on her map.

A sequel to a feral cat-girl

Mike was far less help than Luke had hoped he’d be. Mostly, Mike was standing off to one side, laughing. “Luke, only you could go looking for students and find a feral tiger.”

“She’s not one of ours. At least, I don’t recognize her and she looks a little too old to be one we were supposed to get.” Luke shifted his grip as the catgirl tried to bite him. “I don’t think she has rabies but I don’t really want to find out the hard way, and I don’t want to hurt her.”

“Have you tried talking to her?” Mike smirked from his safe position out of harm’s way. “I know that’s not really your specialty....”

You try talking to her. I think she thinks I’m dinner.”

“You know, I think some chatting would do you good. Just say hi to her, Luke.”

Mike!

“Just a couple words, then I’ll help.”

Luke sighed. “Hello, kitty.” He felt stupid. She was snarling at him more like a cat than a person. Right, what would he say to an unhappy animal? “Easy, there. I don’t want to hurt you.” He mellowed his voice. “I don’t. I have some food back in the van, actually, if you’re hungry.” She wasn’t over-thin, but if she was wild, she was probably hungry. “And fresh water. Do you understand? Water.”

She’d stilled and was staring at him. He didn’t know if she followed anything he said, but she seemed to be relaxing.

Then, suddenly, she stared over his shoulder. Her ears went back and she hissed.

Luke turned, half-losing his grip on the girl as he did so, just as what was clearly a dog-boy leapt on Mike.

Explanation: (Cal you can skip this part you were there)

Okay, here goes.

So: This is in the Lady/Sword timeline after Cya releases Carew and Leo releases Jeska (in late spring/early summer). Cya doesn’t Keep someone - a very notable even - because she has Plans.

These Plans are, OOC, part of the merging of the timelines. IC, they’ll show up soon enough.

Luke gets antsy, the way he does when Boom starts doing something different, and comes to visit to ask them about it.

In the course of that visit, Cya gets a little tetchy, and not just the purposeful level of tetchy she was doing to prod Luke (see: plans).

She gets a map of the former US and Finds with her power the five places where Addergoole alum actually need Luke’s intervention. She highlights them and tells him exactly what the map is for.

Luke, of course, is going to go look, because what else do you do when faced with that? Not go try to save the students you taught who might be at risk?

And yes, Cya is up to something. But this is Cya. She is always up to something.

I wonder what she and Xanatos would do if faced with each other?

So [personal profile] anke is doing #faepril over on tumblr (see here) so I decided to write some fae descriptions. Here's Luke wrangling a wild catgirl.

I kid you not, this showed up on the random Ellehemaei generator.

She wasn’t so much hiding as she was stalking him, Luke realized. He kept getting flashes of her from the corner of his eye - she’d left her Mask down so he could see the catlike ears, the long lashing tail, both striped in a ginger almost the same color as her hair, which fell in wild curls to both sides of her face. He could see the muscles working in her arms as she swung down from a tree branch to land on a roof, but then he lost sight of her for a moment before catching her behind a building, tail lashing, far too much of her dark-tanned honey-brown skin showing. Was she wearing clothes?

It took him several minutes of waiting patiently, sitting in the center of what had been a quaint little town some time ago, before he realized she was actually blinking out of existence. Then she blinked in front of him and he moved, fast as he ever had, and managed to catch her, gently, one hand on each wrist and stiff-arming.

She snarled, teeth like a big cat’s, all sharp and dangerous and - oh, one was broken, that had to hurt, and struggled, but it seemed like she couldn’t flash away when he had her held and she wasn’t stronger than him, no matter how strong she was.

Of course, now he had the tiger by the tail, as it was. “Mike,” Luke bellowed - at this point he wasn’t going to spook this little wild fae any more than he already had. “A hand?”

Talking to Mike was somewhere between miserable and awful, but Luke did his best to pretend that nothing had changed. Mike didn’t want his apology; didn’t want to hear about it. Okay. Until he could figure out what he was supposed to say, then, he could pretend like nothing was wrong.

“Stop looming, Birdbrain, you’re going to curdle the paint.”

“That doesn’t even make any sense.”

“Neither does you lingering by the door like you’re trying to figure out ‘goth’ decades too late.”

“Thanks,” Luke muttered. “I figured out goth just fine.”

“Really? Now that I have to hear. Not now, though. What brings you here melting the finish on my doorframe?”

“I’ve been thinking.” As intros went, leaning in the doorway of Mike’s office with his feet still planted on the hallway floor, it left something to be desired. But he had been, and that had been the best he could come up with.

“I can tell.” Mike smirked up at him. “Come in, feather-brain. Keep doing that and we’ll have an audience in no time.”

So. This came about because of a roleplay conversation between Leo and Luke, sometime… a couple few decades after Coverleaf is built, so in like the 70s, 80s cohorts, IIRC.

But I think it’ll happen in any timeline eventually, once Luke realizes how many assumptions he’s been working on.

“I want you to tell me about being Kept.” Luke had, although he’d deny it if ever asked, practiced that line until it no longer sounded stupid. “What you remember the most, what you hated, anything you liked.”

The student — Denny, a boy born for cy’Linden if there ever had been one, never mind that his mother was cy’Valerian and his father sy’Ginger — raised his eyebrows at LUke. “Do I have to?”

“Your Mentor asked you to cooperate,” Luke reminded him. He would notlet himself get baited. The cy’Linden kids knew how easy it was, and it was practically a sport for them.

Denny had to be thinking the same thing. “Is this punishment for… that thing with the water balloons?”

A long time ago

"Don't mind them."

The fur-taker looked up to see a man filling her doorway, wings spread, carrying something on a tray. Bowls, mugs - whatever it was, it smelled good.

"Come in," she offered weakly. The threshold here was so much less than her swamp, so thin she was fairly certain it held only out of courtesy. Even in her little house in the Village, Regine's magic weighed heavily. In here, in her office...

It was nice of him to pretend, anyway.

"You're Luca, aren't you? The Hunting Hawk."

"And you're the pelt-taker. Regine said you're using the name 'Shira' here?" He stepped inside and closed the door with his foot.

"It's close enough." The Fur-taker wondered if she ought to be worried, but he was not giving off any sense of menace or danger, spread wings or no.

"The others..." He sat down and put the tray between them on a small table. Stew. And tea. "Don't mind them."

"You said that already." Which meant he had more meaning in mind than the words themselves held.

"They're..." He shrugged. "... Fancy."

The fur-taker smirked. "And I am not." She plucked at the hem of her sleeve, a loaned outfit - from Luca here, not from one of the women - and comfortable.

"I'm not, either. But it suits us. They're not sure about seers. The pure-bloods, they don't like what they don't understand."

The fur-taker smiled her sharp smile, the one that said life is hard. "And they understand so little. But you." She looked at him, Looked at him, and nodded. "You understand too much. Be ware, Hawk, or it will cripple you."

It would, she already saw it. But there were paths in which it would free him, too.

“Done already?” Leo asked them. He looked startled.

Mike didn’t know what to think about that, that Leo had expected them to be in there longer.

“Didn’t want to be too long.” The Kept-skirting-orders feelings were coming off of Luke in palpable waves. Mike wondered if he knew it. She wondered how it would change him – this whole thing, the bond, twelve years under the collar, being away from Addergoole.

Leo snorted, with a headshake that looked far too amused. “I’m not even your Keeper.”

“Doesn’t mean you can’t give me orders.” Luke’s shoulders were even hunched forward. It was very nearly adorable.

“I didn’t give you an order, baka.” Leo flicked Luke’s forehead lightly, grinning. Mike fought against her own grin.

This happens after Slave and after, subsequently, Cya, Luke, and Leo have had an off-screen conversation. Thanks to [personal profile] inventrix for editing.

"Oh, Luke." Leo had paused just slightly, with that expression that meant he was being Humorous Leo. "You might want to give Linden some pointers, her punch is terrible."

There had been other words spoken since Luke walked in to find Mike and Leo talking in the General's tent, but those had stuck with him. Those, and the part where Leo had offered to give them some time alone.

"She was concerned we might not be treating you as well as we should," Leo had informed him. There'd been a warning there. Luke had taken it to heart.

Luke stared at Mike.

Mike looked back at him. She was in female form, but her clothes said she had been travelling male.

"You're sure...?" She hadn't said anything since Leo had left. Now, she looked at him with her head tilted, her expression naked.

"You're having trouble with the concept of Belonging to someone else. I imagine your students often feel the same, don't you think?" Cya buckled the harness on him, one strap at a time. "It's not an easy concept. Your will, your actions, your body, all of it is the property of someone else to do with what they want. I was sixteen; I was used to my dad telling me what to do, teachers, other authority figures. Most of us were, at that point, one level or another. You... the only person that's been telling you what to do for the last century's been Regine, your crew... and she spent a lot of time pretending she wasn't, didn't she?"

"She covered a lot of it it." He twitched his wings and ran into the straps. "So, yeah. I got used to thinking nobody was telling me what to do. So?"

"So you've had what, almost three centuries of being your own man, and now... you're not. And it's not an easy concept to internalize and it's not an easy concept for me to hammer home, unless I want to seriously break you, which I don't."

He stared at her. “You put thought into that.”

"Can you Make things or shape them more easily?"

"Shape, usually." He looked at the leather in concern. "What am I shaping?"

She ran her hand over a very thin slice of wood and muttered a Working. When she was done, there was a technical drawing in black - char? - on the light wood sheet. "This."

Luke studied it for a moment. His wings flared out in protest, knocking something off an end table and catching a throw pillow with his bottom wing-claw. "This is for me."

"It's for you."

After Flight
~
Luke flew back slower than he'd flown out. Gwen paced him again, but flew quietly, save for a brief conversation she had with her radio.

Luke resisted the urge to show off, to engage in aerial horseplay with her, to race. She was on a mission, and he --

well, he was probably in a lot of trouble, which he had to admit was a strange feeling. He had answered to Regine, sure, for decades, but he'd been answering to her as an equal.

Or, at least, the treacherous voice in his head suggested, you thought you were equals.

She clearly had other impressions.

That was going to sting for a very long time, he knew. Regine had been pulling and pushing at his mind, at his memories, all this time. She'd been making him into what she needed.

Luke flew.

He didn’t want to do anything but fly for a few minutes, so that’s all he did, letting the wind carry him, letting the air hit his face, letting his wings do their own thinking and his body shift with the currents.

When he started to think again, he flew higher, making the work take all his attention. It had been a while since he’d gotten a good flight in. He should…

The thought hit him like a punch in the guts and he lost his glide for a moment. He flapped hard, caught himself, and found the thermal again, the panic momentarily overwhelming the sudden surge of guilt.

Once he was stabilized, he had no such protection. He should ask Cya if he could do this more often...

Mike probably was laughing at him, or, at least, he would be if any of Luke’s letters got through. Cloverleaf claimed to have a postal system, but you never knew, and Luke was old enough to have outlived several other mail delivery set-ups.

Some part of him thought, perhaps, that all the wiggle room in time when Cya sent him on errands was some sort of trap. She was the unapologetic dictator of an ever-expanding Empire; it wouldn’t be beyond her to have his mail intercepted so she could read it.

“Try to mind your breathing for a minute. In… out.” Her voice had lost all the false sweetness; she sounded like an entirely different person. “In… out.”

Luke paced his breathing to her words and found it an easy pace for long, deep breaths. Slowly, he felt the tension in his wings and shoulders release.

“How’re you feeling?”

They were still barely past halfway through. “I’m okay.”

She tapped his nose very lightly. “Didn’t I tell you not to lie to me?”

He pulled back. “No?” Hunh, he should’ve lied to her. “I mean…”

“How’re you feeling?”

“Like I’ve been put through the wringer,” he admitted. “But I can take more.”

“You’re doing well.” She patted his shoulder. “After this, we’re going to have a conversation about safe words.”

His cheeks heated up. Luke fought against his wings’ urge to flare out and mostly succeeded. “I know about those. I am in a crew with Mike Linden-Blossom.”

It does not reflect on you as a Kept in general, nor does it set any precedents. Understand?"

"It's a sparring session?" Luke guessed. "Wait..." he winced. "It's the sort of sparring session where you show the new kid he'd not as hot of shit as he thought he was, isn't it?"

"That is a pretty close analogy. All right." She glanced at the clock, nodded, as if to herself, and started. "I'm really disappointed in you for not coming home sooner. "Damnit, Regine, those are my students out there. I have to go. I have to help them!" He'd just gotten a report of another one dead, and a whole team of former cy'Lucas was about to go into the most active war zone on the planet.

"No." Regine's voice was icy, beyond calm and into inhuman. "You need to protect Addergoole. That's what you agreed to, and that is what you are going to do. Tempero Intinn Luka Hunting Hawk..." The Working had taken over his mind, and he'd lost both volition and memory of the scene.

With Cya, he didn't think he could assume even that. He shifted from foot to foot, hating himself for doing it but not able to stop the shamefaced way he wanted to grovel and hide at the same time.

"It's your house," he tried, aiming for a gruff voice.

This comes about 7 days after the last post, here: http://aldersprig.dreamwidth.org/1201555.html

Luke had been Kept for eight days, and he had spent 2 evenings with his Keeper. The rest of the time he had spent with Leo's army, doing the job he'd been assigned to - or, at least, the way Leo had chosen to interpret the job Cya had given him.

The army was quite impressive, aside from the whole godhead issue, and there really was quite a bit Luke could do to help. He liked being out in the field again. He'd forgotten how much he enjoyed that: talking to troops, strategizing, scouting. He'd forgotten how much he'd enjoyed being a soldier.

Forgotten - or had the memories pulled out. He'd spend 2 evenings with his Keeper, and she'd spent both of them untangling memories locked up in his mind. Luke didn't want to examine that too closely - or think too hard about why his crewmate, his friend had torn apart his memories and left him with a mind like Swiss cheese.

He glared at the map in front of him and indulged in an overblown wing-flap, knocking over a couple of the figures on the board.

"Why don't you go home tonight?" Leo suggested cheerfully. "It'll still be impossible in the morning."

Luke shook his head. "I'm fine. If I just look at this a little bit longer, I'll figure out what I'm missing."

"No, you're not fine." Leo shook his head. "Come on, you know how this works."

"How what works?" He made the effort to hold his wings in place and not flap, and very carefully put two of the pieces back upright. Pawns. Like Regine treated everyone; like Cya treated everyone.

"Being Kept. Go home, spend some time with your Keeper. You're getting cranky."

"What's that got to do with anything?" This time, Luke didn't control his flap. The little pieces went tumbling again. "These people...!" Leo's order was already pressing at him, though. He fought against it to pick up the poor little pawns. "I'm supposed to be helping you," he tried instead, and hoped it didn't sound too much like a plea.

Leo was looking at him oddly. He cleared his throat and finished straightening the pieces on the board. "Something with the dry creek bed, here, I think that's the solution."

"Go home, Luke. Be with your Keeper before you're unbearable to be around." Leo's voice sounded a little too perky. Luke looked around; there was nobody else in the tent. What...

"I'm just irritated with the map," he lied. He was irritated with Regine, and with memories that he didn't know what to do with, and the nagging sensation that he was doing something awful.

"You know how this works, Luke." There was the briefest hesitation. "Right?"

"Keepers." Luke folded his wings. "You need some sort of proximity." He'd always figured that had a lot to do with the Kept and not so much with the Keeping itself. "I haven't done this before," he added, defensive and not knowing why he was feeling that way.

"You haven't... been Kept before? Cya's your first Keeper?" Leo signaled someone outside the tent.

"Yeah?" Luke shrugged. "I never expected to be in this sort of situation."

Leo's teleporter came in. "Sir?"

"Take Luke here back to Red Doomsday, then return to your normal duties." Leo wasn't looking at Luke. "Go home, Luke."

"Sir." Luke bowed stiffly and let the teleporter take him.

Cya - his owner - his... she directed Luke upstairs, making cracks about Mike at his back. Luke held his wings as still as he could -- the stairwell wasn't that wide -- as she teased him about Mike.

"I'm not..." He pressed his wings a little tighter to his back as he reached the top of the stairwell. "I didn't..."

"You didn't sign up to be Kept at all, so of course I don't think you engineered this to get in my bed. That doesn't mean you might not end up there." She chuckled, and once again Luke struggled to keep his wings under control. "To the left, first door on your left. I think you're going to find being Kept very educational, and I think that it might even be good for you."

This time, he flapped. "You knew that already. The oaths. The twelve years." The first door on his left opened into a spartan bedroom: giant bed, three wooden chests, two deep-silled windows with thick curtains. "You've already helped me out."

"The situation helped you out. I'm talking about the actual Keeping."

Luke turned slowly so he could look at her. She was serious, he thought, although he had a hard time getting a good read on her. "You think... being under the collar... will be good for me?"

"It often is. One, it narrows the scope of concerns. Two, it gives you a different set of feedbacks. Three, of course, it's educational. And four, you can find yourself trying on different roles." She gave him a somewhat sad-seeming smile. "I've done this a few times. I have some experience making sure I'm not the only one who gets something out of it."

Luke narrowed his eyes at her. "And what, exactly, do you get out of it?"

He wasn't expecting her to laugh; he certainly wasn't expecting the delighted sound she made. "Do you really have to ask? Oh, you do, don't you?" She giggled quietly. "I get a man in my bed, Hunting Hawk, and someone to help with the chores, help raise my children when I have them in the house, someone to help me run this city... this nation."

"But... Leo?"

"You might have noticed I stopped taking Kept a few years ago."

Luke glanced away. "Yes." And now he didn't know how to feel at all. Something like guilt was gnawing at him, which was ridiculous. She had maneuvered him into this Keeping. She had maneuvered all of them into this - might have even manipulated Leo into the godhead he was currently enjoying. So why did he feel like he was messing up one of her plans?

He stretched his wings cautiously. There was enough room in here for them; there was enough room in her bed for him to lay with his wings spread and leave room for her.

Somehow, he imagined she'd planned that, even if it hadn't been his wings she'd been thinking of. She had to have Kept someone with wings before him.... right?

She sat down cross-legged at the head of her bed. "Lay down - take your time, get comfy - and put your head in my lap."

Luke was moving before he really considered where he was going, and, despite her "take your time" order, was as comfortable as he was going to be in just a couple moments. His head was pillowed on her calf. It felt... intimate.

He shifted, spreading his wings out as much as he could. Part of him wanted to protest that he shouldn't be in a bed with a student, but the rest of him shut that down as the stupidity it was. "What do you want me to do?"

It was a sign of how badly off-kilter she had him that he was just grateful his voice didn't squeak.

Odile didn't trust this whole set-up.

She'd been outvoted, and Callis and Candace had made very good points. They were hungry, they were dirty, and a couple of them had been sick for weeks. They weren't in great shape. But it was their shape, the shape they'd picked and built and fought for, tooth and claw and knife and gun. There was nobody to tell them what to do, nobody to take out their anger on them. They might not be safe, but they were, well, safer.

But there was an adult with a van, which set off every alarm Odile had, and he wanted to take them somewhere, which set off even more alarms. She stayed near the back, with the little ones who didn't trust him, either, and the older ones who were as cautious as she was. There was food, but she wanted to wait, to make sure it wasn't drugged. There were blankets. Blankets could be a trap. There was a smiling adult, not even as tall as Callis, who looked over every one of the children as if he wanted to collect them all.

"Ten years."

She was sitting on the other side of a glass window that Luke couldn't break -- not that he'd tried all that hard. They were speaking through a telephone. The resemblance to a pre-war prison did not escape Luke.

"That's a long time," he stalled. It wasn't, really. Not to creatures as old as they were. "You can't send me to attack Addergoole."

Written to [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's prompt(s) here to my Summer Giraffe Call.

“Come on.”

“I didn’t mean to…” Krešimir winced ruefully at the hallway. It was sopping wet, but only because Mirembe had summoned up a storm. Under the water, it was charred, the panelling falling off the walls where it wasn’t just gone. “I really didn’t.”

“Come on.” Luke’s hand was firm on Krešo’s shoulder and he had started to walk away. Krešo didn’t really have a lot of choice except to follow the gym teacher-slash-security officer — or lose his shoulder, which didn’t seem like a lot of fun.

This is written to a prompt [livejournal.com profile] cluudle left back in August, 2015

Luke didn't like her, and he really did not like teaching her.

Shahin found that a little amusing, but she tried not to antagonize the man too much. She wanted to become better at Kwxe. Everything she found in every vision told her she was going to need it. Everything the teachers didn't want to tell her enforced that - up to and including the fact that, despite the fact that Luke did not like teaching her, he'd agreed to meet with her three times a week to practice Kwxe.

"What are you going to use this for?" he demanded today. Shahin smiled, a small expression that was as dry and as careful as she could make it.

"I was thinking," she offered, "that I would use it to stop Dragons. Or - if I can't stop them..." She would stop them, she knew it. But that would be much later. "...then to stall them."

She noted that he was surprised, and a bit chagrined, and quite a bit worried. She decided she could live with that.

This story is of questionable canonicality - it probably happened, probably about 100 years after Cya & Leo graduate from Addergoole (or about 93 years after the end of the world) - but the exact date is up in the air, as well as some details.

All Leo lines in this story are as-written by [personal profile] inventrix in the roleplay that sparked this

There were sparks of electricity flying around the air. The grass beneath their feet was damp, too early yet for it to be a fire risk, but Luke still worried. Lightning could burn down a forest, after all, and he would not forgive himself - even if Cynara did – if he caused Leo to scorch the fields outside her city.

They didn’t want a war. Luke took a few breaths and tried to rein in his temper. It wasn’t working.

…avoid making unfounded accusations against my crew, Leo had snarled, as if his crew wasn’t the problem. Luke took another breath. Mike would want him to be calm.

Leo stared levelly at Luke, taking his time about answering. Luke wondered if he was working around an order. Cynara always had been thorough about that sort of thing with her Kept.

“Outside the outer walls,” he finally came up with, “if you want to be completely certain.”

That was a lovely place for a trap. “Good.” It was also inarguably outside of Cynara’s domain. “Let’s go there.”

He stalked behind a silent Leo all the way to the gate. People stared. He didn’t mind. He was a Mara, after all. He was supposed to be frightening.

Leo was not the least bit frightened. They stood on the grassy plain outside of Cloverleaf, Leo returning Luke’s glare calmly. “Now that we’re safe,” he began, with more sarcasm than Luke had known Leo was capable of, “maybe you can explain why you're here unannounced?”

Luke grabbed for words. I was worried sounded too weak, too stupid. You were an idiot was a matter of course for cy’Luca, sadly. If he visited every former student who’d been stupid, he’d never have time to teach.

“What happened?” he snarled. Leo knew why he was here. He was just wasting time.

"You're going to have to be more specific."

No, he was taunting Luke, playing with him.

“Don’t give me that shit.” What sort of game was he playing? What was Cynara playing at? “Mike comes back from one of his little ‘field trips’, and there you are on the front page of this place's newspaper, collared.

“So?” The little shit looked smug.

Luke knew he wasn't thinking straight. He was flying erratically. He was having trouble controlling his wing movements when not in flight. His fists were clenching and unclenching. He hadn't been this stressed, this worried, in decades.

There were groups the Addergoole teachers and staff monitored, most but not all of them Addergoole grads. Boom had always been Drake and Luke's purview, because they were the two teachers least likely to be sent away.
