The summer was a hot one, a dry one, and, all over the land, fountains had dried up and every drop of water was hoarded.

The weather was as warm as it ever got on the Northern Sea, and the waters were full of bathers from all over the Empire. It was quite the place to go, Scheffenon, known for its rejuvenative waters, its quiet and attentive, yet non-inquisitive staff, and its beautiful fountains.

Daxton was captive again, struggling not to take it in ill grace. This time, it seemed unlikely that Esha could rescue him.

It was a captivity far more posh and sometimes far less comfortable than his time in the Red Queen’s dungeons.

“Again…” Caecelia murmured, distressed, and then, triumphant, “South!”

Her finger landed on the map, pointing to the tail end of a long gorge, a place still virtually inaccessible by humans. Not that they wouldn’t try, called by the siren call of the monsters, try and die in droves if the monsters were note stopped.

The Tinies are creatures of the Dragons Next Door setting and are loosely based on my memories of the Borrowers books.
This was meant to be a short microfic - oops.

👾

The Tinies had lived alongside humans as long as the humans had been living in houses, and, although they were a scattered and fragmented society, they had traditions and unwritten rules that they carried from home to home and community to community, mostly carried by the old, those past their adventuring days.

They liked their god, and so they’d kept him. Around them, the world had crumbled to pieces, the new gods, creatures like him, warring against the self-appointed protectors of humanity. In their little fort on the hill, though, they’d been drunk, happy and content to stay that way. And every season, they’d paid homage to their new god, for all he gave them.

In Firrset, as in many places, there are poets. The legend goes that even in the First Days, when there was no food to eat and no time to do anything but hunt, plant, gather, and store, there were poems they would tell each other across the field.
But the greatest poet of the time came quite some time after that, but in a time still mostly buried away from history's records.

Novemeber had a lot of, ah, false starts. So here's another one, the beginning of the first story I started about flying.

Problem was, it's sort of a nice setting image but it doesn't want to go anywhere.

Taking flight hadn't been the easy part; it'd been terrifying, horrible, and, for more than a couple minutes, Parastoo had been absolutely certain she was going to die.

But every child did it, dove from the next, caught the wind, spread their wings, and flew - or missed, and tumbled, climbed back up and tried it again. Every child had to fly, if they wanted to ever be an adult, if they ever wanted to really leave home.

I want to talk about project expansion.

You know, when you think you’re going to knit something and realize first you need to ball the yarn and find your needles (and lock the cat in the bathroom) and figure out this pattern and oh hey it’s bedtime.

Or you’re just going to put the trim on the door but it turns out the threshold and the inner frame need repairing and the door strike is a mess and… wait, where did the weekend go?

Or if you’re going to put the new trim up, you really ought to put a new coat of paint on the room and replace the light and insulate the ceiling and… oh. It’s November? Oops.

The Expectant Wood is Back!

Nimbus tried to scramble further up the wall, but there was still no purchase, and even the window-slit sheared of prickers offered her no easy place to put her hands. “I don’t want to come with you! My parents are right up there,” she gestured. “I want to go with my parents.”

(considering the subject matter, this is December's Trunk Story)

“Really, Quizzico? Seriously?”

Quizzico had no answer, so the Tigress looped a few vine-like ropes around the villain - not that Quizzico really counted as a villain, more like a nuisance prankster - and left him, thus trussed, in front of the Ninth Precinct station with a short note pinned to his costume.

I've redone the milestones and the donation tiers. There's several new donation tiers at $3, $7, $10, and $15/month, including a peek into my trunk, a rifle through my recipe box, and access to my map case.

The milestones have changed to reflect the new tiers, too; the higher we get, the more recipes, the more trunk stories, the more maps you'll get. I'm excited about the changes! I think it'll be fun to broaden out the content here.

I hope you enjoyed the Christmas reposts. I think I'm going to try something like that - not every month, but when I can come up with a reasonable holiday theme. I've got content going back past 2008; even I've forgotten stuff from that long ago :-)

This story was written for the November "Catgirls and other animal people" theme.

Ashana stalked through the world, her big boots soundless but her stride seeming to suggest thunder, windstorms, danger; her leather jacket belted around her like armor, like a warning sign; her knives hidden but her sharp edges no less visible.

She scowled at the world, a quirked eyebrow the only threat she needed to make most of the time: wanna make something of it? Most people were wiser than to try.

The poll has spoken!

The theme for January is Thresholds and Liminal Spaces. For a $5/month pledge, you can leave all the prompts you want.

Doorways literal and figurative, steps into new lives, leaving beyond the old - it's a good theme for a new year.

This was originally posted on February 15, 2012; it's an early-ish story of Stranded world and it involves both thresholds and transitions.

"I think you should come hang out next weekend," Calgary told Autumn, over the last beer of the last day of Faire. "Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur are building a house."

"Seriously?" she raised an eyebrow. She was far too drunk to be polite when faced with that.

Calgary grinned, and quaffed her beer. "Three friends of mine, been together since college. Not Faire folk but fair folk, if you know what I mean...

aldersprig: a close up of an alder leaf (Leaf)

This is set in the same universe as Lady Taisiya's Fourth Husband , a world where women are far more rare than men and most women have at least three husbands. Men co-raise their wife's children ("egglings"), but there is a strict hierarchy within the household.

“You are, without a doubt, the most difficult child I have ever had the misfortune to know.”

Pontlin was not Kivo’s shell-father — that was Yurnan, Lady Ruhinna’s most junior husband — but he was the senior husband and thus the senior father in the nursery, and he had taken a dislike to Kivo early. This wasn’t even the first time Kivo had heard this particular tirade this cycle, although Pontlin, who had wanted to be a performer, always added a certain twist to his lectures, a bit of dramatic flair.

“It is as if you look, specifically, for the most vexing thing you could do, and then try in some manner to make it more vexing...”

This story was originally posted Dec. 27th, 2011. It takes place in the Facets of Dusk universe, or, rather, between many of the universes of that setting. The Facets team is moving through Doors between universes, mapping them... or, possibly, stuck trying to find the right one home.

“Working on Christmas,” Xenia grumbled. She checked her weapons again, as if that would help

“Well, what would you prefer?” Aerich snapped. “We could stay here in this wasteland, or we could go through the Door and hope there’s a building with four standing walls there.”

Jessica had bypassed frightened and headed straight into a numb sort of terror. She clung tightly to Tyler’s hand, grateful for his presence while cringing as he yelled at the nurse. “What do you mean there’s no-one on duty?”

“It’s a federal holiday. There’s a skeleton staff, but there’s no-one in the OB-GYN department and we weren’t expecting you and your… young lady.”

I started out with Hob's punnish prompt and I may have just invented a new world. Also, Coffee Shop, because, well, there's coffee shop AU's everywhere so I just decided the U should be in a coffee shop.

Ahem. It was late and I was sleepy-giddy. Have a story. New 'Verse.

The shop wasn't all that busy. Haley wasn't surprised: it was the middle of the day on the Thursday before Christmas, they were in a college-town area, not a high retail-traffic sort of place, and the snow was knee deep in the shallow parts. They were only open for the UPS drivers & bus drivers, if she was going to be honest. And to give Cady the hours, because Cady needed the money.

Haley didn't mind having the extra help...
