The Tinies are creatures of the Dragons Next Door setting and are loosely based on my memories of the Borrowers books.
This was meant to be a short microfic - oops.

👾

The Tinies had lived alongside humans as long as the humans had been living in houses, and, although they were a scattered and fragmented society, they had traditions and unwritten rules that they carried from home to home and community to community, mostly carried by the old, those past their adventuring days.

I’m a bit behind on the next chapter of the Expectant Wood, so have a piece of history I wrote a while ago in the meantime.
🌋

The land was rising.

The people on the islands and the small nation of Aerax clung to whatever support they could find. The last magical explosions of the Roquelan Wars had been over for days. Nobody had expected another attack.

I don’t even remember what I wrote this for, but it suits the theme of May.
🍇

They liked their god, and so they’d kept him. Around them, the world had crumbled to pieces, the new gods, creatures like him, warring against the self-appointed protectors of humanity. In their little fort on the hill, though, they’d been drunk, happy and content to stay that way. And every season, they’d paid homage to their new god, for all he gave them.

They had discussed it all beforehand. Summer’s mom was just an e-mail send. Bishop’s parents: “Dad’ll probably buy me a beer, and mom will swoon. No biggie, really.” So it was Melinda’s parents who would be tricky, and thus they managed to schedule that meeting earliest on Parents’ Weekend.

This story fits in my Toot Planet setting, although it is considerably longer than many of the “tootfics” I have written for it, a tootfic being a fiction of 500 or fewer characters.

You can see many of those tootplanet microfics here, and the hashtag, which began with Catterfly’s planetary art, here.

That being said, here’s the story.

Explorer’s Log, Planet 7-3-3

(Planetary Date 4 days)

We landed harder than planned but not quite a crash, after an EMP on the way in — or something similar enough that the effects appear identical — fried every piece of electronics not in deep storage. Landed hard but not a crash-landing; the shuttle is intact, if unflyable, and so’s the team.

Nimbus pulled her knees up to her chest and looked at Cartwright, trying to be polite but also a little worried — more than a little worried. Quite a bit concerned at his ridiculous assertion. “The watering can?” she repeated carefully. “Is Aereaxera thirsty?”

🌳
By the time Cartwright had finished pulling prickers out of her hands, Nimbus was struggling to stay awake. “It seems,” he told her, his voice far too quiet and calm, “that the poison in the prickers puts you to sleep when they are pulled out.”
The thought penetrated her fog. “So that the plant could digest me better. If I struggled, I’d run into the prickers, and if I fought the prickers, they’d knock me out.”

Hello everyone!
It’s May - well, as I’m writing this, it’s April 30th, but when I post it, it’ll be May, so that counts, right?

So far, we’ve had lots of April showers here but no pilgrims.

Welcome to my new Patron! Now we’re to the two serial posts a month part.

Speaking of the Serial...
~
Nimbus let her eyes adjust to the light. The lamps marked out four walls, each maybe five paces from each other. One wall was filled with a stone contrivance of some sort that she thought was probably a hearth and fireplace. The opposite side held some sort of shelf folded up against the wall. The two remaining sides held doors, closer to her height than Cartwright's, although the ceiling looked plenty tall for him.

The Expectant Wood is Back!

Nimbus tried to scramble further up the wall, but there was still no purchase, and even the window-slit sheared of prickers offered her no easy place to put her hands. “I don’t want to come with you! My parents are right up there,” she gestured. “I want to go with my parents.”

(considering the subject matter, this is December's Trunk Story)

~

“Really, Quizzico? Seriously?”

Quizzico had no answer, so the Tigress looped a few vine-like ropes around the villain - not that Quizzico really counted as a villain, more like a nuisance prankster - and left him, thus trussed, in front of the Ninth Precinct station with a short note pinned to his costume.

I mentioned I wanted to do a Worldbuilding challenge based on the doodle challenge. [personal profile] inventrix made me a modified list.

Day 2 is Climate. The climate of the world around Aerax (that's an island with a center pinacle on top of a long tree trunk, not the Space Needle) is temperate, wet, and windy, especially up on the islands. (There's a cactus on the other side because the original challenge was "cactus", and also because over on the far side of the mountains, the weather is much dryer.)

Aerax and the sky islands are the setting of my Patreon serial The Expectant Wood.

Summary of All Aerax

Chapter Six: The Cut in Aereaxera

Didda didn’t like it. He didn’t have to say it; it was obvious in the way his lips were all squished tight together and the way he moved, like if he could take out enough of his anger on the thorns of Aereaxera, he wouldn’t shout like he wanted to....

🍂🍂🍂

The Expectant Wood follows young Nimbus down into the depths of strange Aereaxera, an island floating on a tall stem, high above the land below.  Follow her adventures as she and her family - her Didda and Mem, her sisters Billow and Shining Pearl - go places nobody else has gone and meet strange people and stranger plants.

Chapter Five: The First Rescue

“Nimbus! Billow! Can you hear us!” Didda sounded, NImbus realized with some surprise, worried. Panicked, really.

“Nimber, Billbill?” Nimbus wrinkled her nose as Pearl resorted to their baby names.

“We’re here!” she called out, careful to shout over Billow’s head and not into her ear. “We fell into a — into a stomach or something. Careful! The wall openings are full of prickers!”

“Oh, my babies…” Mem sounded miserable.

Chapter Four: The Sharp Exit

Billow’s lips were pursed and her hands were gripping Nimbus’ wrist tight enough to leave marks. Nimbus wanted to reassure her, but she needed all her breath just to keep pulling herself up the side of the slippery floor. For every three steps she managed upwards, it seemed like she slid down two.

“Hold… on…” she managed.

Chapter 3: The Slippery Stamen-End

Billow wasn’t screaming, or whining, or even whimpering. She was holding very still, slowly sliding towards the center of the stamen-bottom. Nimbus felt something tighten in her chest, but she didn’t have time for panic. She dropped to the ground, splaying her feet out and seeking some purchase, and reached for Billow.

She couldn’t quite reach, and if she moved any further forward she was going to end up on the wrong end of the slope.

Chapter One: Trouble at the Stamen

Chapter 2: The Stamen End

“Aurora, do you really think we should bring Billow and Nimbus down there if something strange is going on?” Nimbus’ father was leaning down over the hole in the center of the island, tutting at Nimbus’ mother, who was already far down the narrow tube. He didn’t hear Nimbus coming up behind him, although he must have heard Billow, still waiting halfway down the steep climb, complaining.

Chapter One: Trouble at the Stamen

“Mem! Pearl! Come onnn.” The nearer you got to the center of the island, the steeper the terrain got, the further ahead Nimbus’ mother and older sister got, and the more her little sister Billow complained about it....

Nimbus and her family are on an ordinary expedition to the Center of the island of Aereaxera when things start getting a bit noisy.

This fantasy adventure story takes place in and around the sky islands of The Aereaxerer archipelago. It will post once/month (although it will start at 2 posts/month to catch up) and is available to all Patreon patrons.

Okay, I have a Serial family.

But they need names! Also, I need a POV character of them, pref. one of the kids. I'm thinking Middle Daughter - thoughts?

We have their brief bios (see link above) and know that they live on a tropical sky island and like to hike.

Also, they're about to go on an adventure.

Name them?

We have Parent One, Parent Two, and Daughters One through Three.

While we're at it, the setting/serial need names too!

I'm trying something new with the upcoming serial - essentially asking the prompter-level donors to fill in parts of the serial description.

Clare filled in the first blank, giving us the Serial Family of hikers.

MB & @Dahob filled in the next two, so now I have: Once, there was a [(Family of Hikers)] who lived in a [(tropical)] [(sky island)].

Here's your tropical sky island: https://www.patreon.com/posts/serial-islands-4839730
