Chapter 28: Cya
by Lyn Thorne-Alder

“I don’t understand.” Cynara leaned forward over Professor Drake’s desk.  “There are a lot of things I don’t understand, but this one, this one seems too strange.  If this is the Law, why put something like that in there?”

Professor Drake sat back and smiled at her.  “I have often wondered that myself,” he admitted.  Cynara was finding that she really enjoyed talking to him, and not just because he, of almost everyone in the school, seemed to actually see her. (The thought filled her with several flavors of guilt, but she was getting very skilled at ignoring those.)  “So, firstly, as we understand it, the Laws were created back in the days where those Ellehemaei on Earth were the gods themselves and their wayward children.  Those children were often very powerful and just as often very difficult, very recalcitrant.”

Jamian still loved the idea of summer vacation. The world had more or less fallen down around their ears; the resort towns were all boarded up, fallen down, or walled off into compounds; there was no office job to take a vacation from, no school to get the kids out of, and his kids were all out of the nest anyway.

“It looks like she’s succeeding.”  Shahin looked around the room.  They’d gathered in the Dining Hall, because nobody’s suite was large enough for this, and, because, as Kailani said, “we have nothing to hide, and we should not pretend that we do.  We’re not sneaking around, and nobody would trust the cy’Regine if we were.”

Conrad was good for Kailani, Shahin thought.  He was certainly encouraging her to be more socially aware.

“There you go.”  Professor Valerian wrapped up the last of what she called Juniper’s hothouse Workings. “You sure I can’t convince you to come out to the real sun?  It’s better for you, you know.”

Juniper stretched up to the warmth.  She should not have been surprised by an arboreal Change, not with her name, but for the life she’d chosen, something like a mole Change might have suited her better. “I’m not going out there,” she murmured.

Chapter 21: Leofric
by Inspector Caracal

Tuesday, October 31, 2000

Leofric studiously took notes as Professor Pelletier wrote another equation on the board. Physics was a good class for not thinking about what was going on. And even if some of it had been pretty cool — he was growing antlers, Dr. Caitrin said, and now he had some kind of awesome electricity powers — most of it was… Well, he was trying not to think about it.

He’d gotten the worrying thing sorted, at least, after spending a few days convincing himself that a desire to help was not worry — and if he had to abatu his hugr every now and then, well, nobody had told him not to do Workings on himself. And using magic to destroy the feeling was the only reliable way to stop worrying that he’d figured out.

by Lyn Thorne-Alder

Wednesday, October 25, 2000

“Ugh.”  The lights flickered out with a crackle.  “Leofric!”

Eriko’s expression needed no light.  Cynara could see the tired twist of her face already, the exasperated way she looked when she dealt with her boyfriend.  She could see Leo’s cringing apology too, the way his shoulders would shrug forward and he’d try to make himself smaller.  It made Cynara want to hug him; it made her want to punch Eriko.

“It wasn’t me,” Leo protested weakly.

Eriko was busy doing her homework. For anything else, it would've been a bad time — it was a bad time, if he was being honest, but it was almost impossible to find a good time when it was just the two of them. And Leofric really wanted this to be a private conversation.

Leofric had chosen a spot on the floor that was clearly visible from her desk (but not in the way; he didn't want to be in the way, she didn't like that) and knelt there. He didn't want to interrupt her; he couldn't interrupt her, even if he wanted to, not since that one time he had and she'd ordered him not to. So instead, he settled into his spot and waited.

by Inspector Caracal

Monday, October 2, 2000

Leofric ducked to the side barely in time as Alexander swung at him, almost tripping over his own feet. Cy’ree practice was usually one of his favorite events — after his usual kendo lesson, also with Luke — but today, he just couldn’t focus. There was too much going on, too much to worry about, and first and foremost of those things: something was wrong with Zita. Not just how he could tell she was having to work around orders more and more, but the way she smiled sometimes, all sharp and aggressive, or the time she’d had to be excused because her teeth started falling out (it was part of her Change, the doctor said).

A sequel to a feral cat-girl and Here, Kitty, Kitty

“Easy, easy, shit, easy.” Luke almost lost his hold on the girl as she did her best to scramble out of his hands, over him, and onto the dog-boy. Or, at least, he was pretty sure that’s where she was going. Mike, on the other hand, shouted a Working so fast that his words blurred together and so loudly they might have heard it back at Addergoole, and the dog-boy fell asleep.

Almost abashed, Luke remembered he could do Workings, and, in a much quieter, much more soothing tone, did a Calm Down working on the cat-girl. “Easy, easy. Okay. There.” She was looking at him, sleepy now but definitely calm. “Okay. So, do you understand me?”

She shook her head no. Luke managed not to laugh in her face.

“Do you have a name?”

She had to think about that. After a moment, she offered “Cat.”

“Well, that’s a label, at least. Hello, Cat. I’m Luke.”

So [personal profile] anke is doing #faepril over on tumblr (see here) so I decided to write some fae descriptions. Here's a unicorn mechanic.

Cya had, for once, not been looking for fae.

She had been looking for someone who could help her fix her car, actually, or the thing that, 50 years past the end of most manufacturing in the world, she was calling a car.

It wasn’t that easy, however, when you were three days out from anywhere, you were driving a cobbled-together vehicle that ran on sunlight, hope, and magic, and the last time you’d seen anyone had been half a day ago.
And it was raining.

The man came out of nowhere, or at least, he seemed to, and when he saw her Mask was down, showing off her Fae traits, he dropped his own glamour to show her that he, too, was fae.

The unicorn horn caught her attention immediately, the golden hair - not blonde, gold - that ran all the way down his back, the skin that was just as golden. He was tall, very tall for this long past the apocalypse, and bright like a statue.

When he saw she was squinting, he put up his Mask again, leaving him red-haired and brown-skinned, freckles dancing over his nose that was nearly as pointed as the horn she couldn’t see anymore.

“So. Car troubles?” It was only then that she noticed he was carrying a bag of tools. “I had this sense someone here might need some help.”

A sequel to a feral cat-girl

Mike was far less help than Luke had hoped he’d be. Mostly, Mike was standing off to one side, laughing. “Luke, only you could go looking for students and find a feral tiger.”

“She’s not one of ours. At least, I don’t recognize her and she looks a little too old to be one we were supposed to get.” Luke shifted his grip as the catgirl tried to bite him. “I don’t think she has rabies but I don’t really want to find out the hard way, and I don’t want to hurt her.”

“Have you tried talking to her?” Mike smirked from his safe position out of harm’s way. “I know that’s not really your specialty....”

You try talking to her. I think she thinks I’m dinner.”

“You know, I think some chatting would do you good. Just say hi to her, Luke.”

Mike!

“Just a couple words, then I’ll help.”

Luke sighed. “Hello, kitty.” He felt stupid. She was snarling at him more like a cat than a person. Right, what would he say to an unhappy animal? “Easy, there. I don’t want to hurt you.” He mellowed his voice. “I don’t. I have some food back in the van, actually, if you’re hungry.” She wasn’t over-thin, but if she was wild, she was probably hungry. “And fresh water. Do you understand? Water.”

She’d stilled and was staring at him. He didn’t know if she followed anything he said, but she seemed to be relaxing.

Then, suddenly, she stared over his shoulder. Her ears went back and she hissed.

Luke turned, half-losing his grip on the girl as he did so, just as what was clearly a dog-boy leapt on Mike.

So [personal profile] anke is doing #faepril over on tumblr (see here) so I decided to write some fae descriptions. Here's Luke wrangling a wild catgirl.

I kid you not, this showed up on the random Ellehemaei generator.

She wasn’t so much hiding as she was stalking him, Luke realized. He kept getting flashes of her from the corner of his eye - she’d left her Mask down so he could see the catlike ears, the long lashing tail, both striped in a ginger almost the same color as her hair, which fell in wild curls to both sides of her face. He could see the muscles working in her arms as she swung down from a tree branch to land on a roof, but then he lost sight of her for a moment before catching her behind a building, tail lashing, far too much of her dark-tanned honey-brown skin showing. Was she wearing clothes?

It took him several minutes of waiting patiently, sitting in the center of what had been a quaint little town some time ago, before he realized she was actually blinking out of existence. Then she blinked in front of him and he moved, fast as he ever had, and managed to catch her, gently, one hand on each wrist and stiff-arming.

She snarled, teeth like a big cat’s, all sharp and dangerous and - oh, one was broken, that had to hurt, and struggled, but it seemed like she couldn’t flash away when he had her held and she wasn’t stronger than him, no matter how strong she was.

Of course, now he had the tiger by the tail, as it was. “Mike,” Luke bellowed - at this point he wasn’t going to spook this little wild fae any more than he already had. “A hand?”

Chapter 9: Leofric
by Inspector Caracal

Tuesday, September 19, 2000

The clothing, Leofric had to admit, didn't look bad. It wasn't very comfortable, though: the long sleeves and cuffs, the shirt collar, the way he kept catching his backpack on the buttons down the front, the stiff new shoes. And the collar, of course. The clothes were just dress clothes, nothing too weird, but the collar was a different story.

He resisted the urge to fidget with it again; Eriko didn't like fidgeting, so he was trying to avoid building a habit. But the leather sat snug up against his neck, reminding him it was there every time he moved. Every time he breathed.

He glanced over at her, and she recognized the expression, even if he looked nothing like Cabal, nothing like Gaheris. “I got it.” He was quiet for a minute, as she led him out of Leo’s house and down the quiet neighborhood street. “You don’ like, uh. Being emotive.”

She snorted, laughing at herself, at his phrasing, at the whole mess. “Let’s be honest,” she said, dryly and more openly than she usually was with her Kept. “I don’t like having emotions. But Leo - thinks that’s a mess, and Dr. Rexinger agrees, and if I’m going to be entirely honest, if one of my Kept told me they didn’t like having emotions, I’d spend the whole year helping them work through that. The first time he’d walked these halls, they’d been terrifying.   His footsteps had echoed, the collar around his throat had weighed strangely on him, and it seemed that everyone was staring at him.

More than two decades later, it didn’t seem as if much had changed.  There was carpet and paneling now, discrete drop ceilings and nooks that further broke up the sound.  There were students here now, filling the halls, lounging in the dining hall, exploring the library.  Ambrus was a student now, with a new twist on his name and a proud place in the Sixth Cohort.  And if there were children of his in every Cohort here (he was fairly certain there were, although there were still holes in his memory), well, he still looked young enough to be a student.  And he was still woefully ignorant enough to require the education, too.

So, it turns out, when you get [personal profile] inventrix and I together, what you end up with is a whole lot of different timelines for the same characters.

This is as comprehensive as I can come up with a list of Cya-Leo-Boom timelines we might have posted stories for.

[personal profile] inventrix, if I’ve missed something, misrepresented something, or mislaid something, please let me know!

It appears that the turning points are:

1) When Leo (and thus Cya) gets sane. In canon, and in timelines that could be canon, that happens after Cya builds Cloverleaf, which itself is ~40 years after they attend Addergoole (see Ghost Story).
2) Whether Cya Keeps Leo or he swears an oath of obedience and service to her.
3) If/When they come to the realization that what Cya wants from Leo is not what Leo can provide
“Cya cried,” he says, a little too matter of fact, “because she’s accepted I’m not going to love her back.”
“…The fuck you say?”
“Not the way she wants, at least.”

“So, the basics are simple enough, you’ve got me,” he holds out one hand, “and Cya,” he holds out the other, “and we both care about each other way too much. The problem is, Cya has like a tragic romance thing going on because she wants me to be in love with her back, but like… whatever the hell I feel, it’s not that, and I don’t care what that stupid kid says,” he adds in an annoyed mutter, “I’m not going to go pretending to feel something I don’t when it’s just going to fuck everything up in the end and it’s none of his fucking business anyway.”
Leo pauses and clears his throat a little awkwardly. “…anyway, so. Her side, nice, fairly straightforward, normal romantic obsession. My side, some kind of weird martyr Kept knight thing. Which would be fine except like, the one thing Cya wants more than anything in pretty much the whole world is to be attached to just one guy who will actually, you know, love her back? You’d think after--” He stops himself from tangenting this time. “So since I’m obviously not that guy, I talked her into trying dating so she’s at least meeting people who aren’t fresh Addergoole grad Kept with issues.”
4) Whether they all flip the F out and kill everyone their first year.

Cynara had been the new student at more schools than she could count, in at least eight states, two provinces, and a territory.  None of them had ever been like this.

Of course, none of them had been full of fae.  That was mark one.  The horns, the tails, the cute snake-boy with the green hair and the chalk-white skin, the cuter-still dark-haired one with fire in his eyes and tattoos slinking across his bare chest.  The casual discussion in class of fae, of Daeva  - Jaya and Professor VanderLinden, of course – and Mara and Grigori – Luke and Director Avonmorea – and all of this other stuff that her father had only talked about on rare occasion when drunk.

Okay, so the premise of this is thus: in this timeline, Cya has a small meltdown when she realizes that Leo is never going to love her the way she loves him. This has always been true. She’s always known it to be true. But she’s got a lot of practice at denial.

Anyway, her poor Kept has to deal with sobbing Cya and… in a move proving why her power thought he needed to be in a protective Keeping for a year… punches Leo in the face.

So. This came about because of a roleplay conversation between Leo and Luke, sometime… a couple few decades after Coverleaf is built, so in like the 70s, 80s cohorts, IIRC.

But I think it’ll happen in any timeline eventually, once Luke realizes how many assumptions he’s been working on.

“I want you to tell me about being Kept.” Luke had, although he’d deny it if ever asked, practiced that line until it no longer sounded stupid. “What you remember the most, what you hated, anything you liked.”

The student — Denny, a boy born for cy’Linden if there ever had been one, never mind that his mother was cy’Valerian and his father sy’Ginger — raised his eyebrows at LUke. “Do I have to?”

“Your Mentor asked you to cooperate,” Luke reminded him. He would notlet himself get baited. The cy’Linden kids knew how easy it was, and it was practically a sport for them.

Denny had to be thinking the same thing. “Is this punishment for… that thing with the water balloons?”
