I have an idea, but these are the false starts on the way. Content warning on the second one: child abuse

Harry Potter lived in a hole. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing to sit down on or to eat. No, Harry Potter and his Aunt Petunia, his Uncle Vernon, and their son Dudley were currently living in the finest hole money could buy.

It was a very nice hole, with a large-screen TV, all the latest in video games, and three separate bedrooms, or, at least, bed-sections. It had food enough to last for several years, or, with Vernon and Dudley eating, three or four weeks.

It belonged, in title, to a co-worker of Vernon’s, and it was quite a ways out in the country, as such things went. And yet many of these buildings appeared to be well over a century old, if the aging signs had not changed utterly.

She paused to look out a window. The world around her tower was so much more crowded, and the people in so much more of a hurry, than anything she remembered from before. All those people. Were they heroes? Were they adventurers? Who would come to a seat of the muses that would need to see a Kael - a Kael, not the Kael, and even Kael could recognize the phrase Back Stage.

Nilien held her pencil in front of her and practiced floating it. It bounced along in front of her, sometimes dipping down into her hand, sometimes lifting up further than she’d really meant to.

Ember was still a little miffed and walked behind Nilien, so that you do not hit me on the head again, it informed her, since you are being so very irresponsible with that thing.

“I thought you wanted me to practice and get better.” She was teasing Ember, she knew she was, but she was feeling so giddy she couldn’t help herself.
