Chapter 49: Leofric

Leofric was in the nurse’s office for the third time that week.

This time, at least, he knew why he was there, which he felt was supposed to be an improvement. He flexed the fingers of his right hand, making sure all the muscles and bones felt lined up right – not that he doubted Dr. Caitrin’s ability to magically heal things, but he could magically heal things too, and he had a feeling the better he knew what things felt like when they were all in the right places, the better he could fix them himself. Then he wouldn’t need to go to the nurse’s office every time he put a hand through a wall. Or a desk. Or someone’s face.

Interlude: Juniper 2

“I don’t want to know.”. Juniper shook her head, not for the first time, and pressed the letter into Professor Valerian’s hands. “Holly took… Holly has… I don’t have to have anything to do with either of them, that’s the point. It sucks, it sucks so much, that this is the only way for me to get out of here…” She swallowed around a lump in her throat. “I’m getting out of here? For real?”

“Your graduation requirements have all been met.”. Professor Valerian nodded slowly. “Juniper, you ought to—”

Interlude: Ofir

Xaviera liked to go to the cy’Linden parties. Ofir was pretty sure by now that it was something to do with her memories of Ardell. He’d treated her like a thing, like an object.

Ofir wasn’t going to do that, at least. She was a person. When she wasn’t ignoring him, he was actually kind of fond of her. She wasn’t all that bright, but that was fine. He could steer her easier if she didn’t notice exactly what he was doing.

Interlude: Workings vs. Halfbreed Innates

The variety of innate powers demonstrated by halfbreed Changes is one of the strongest arguments in their favor. While all Ellehemaei can use Words, and Workings grant Ellehemaei a wide range of powers and abilities far beyond those which humans can possibly achieve, being able to wield magic without needing Words is an entirely different story.

Raizel sat down. She wasn’t sure she had another option. The Diamond Raven stood behind her, his hands on her chair. She wondered at that, but she could ask him later.

“I have to get to the capital,” she told the Judge. “That has to be what I have to do first. If I miss the census-”

“Yes, yes, they have impressed on everyone how awful it would be to miss the census, I understand. And yes, you must pay taxes. Where would we be without taxes? I’d be out of a job, for one.” He flapped his hand in her direction. “No, no. This, I want you to do while you go. People are starting to hear about you, you see. People listen to you. I’m not sure why, but it’s not mine to reason why. It’s just mine to assign the tasks as they come to me.”

🔒

“Ctirad. Come on, kitten, come back to me.” The voice was gentle. Ctirad blinked. He had – he had dozed a bit, hadn’t he? He’d floated on the praise. He cleared his throat and miawed carefully, a question, an indication that he was aware, what does my master want of me?

“That’s a good kitten. Are you ready to be a boy, a person for me again?”

Was he ready? No. He started to shake his head and then looked up at his master’s face. Was there a right answer?
