I haven’t done this in a while (ahem. Since September.) But if you’re only reading me  here, you’re missing things!

Or at least some things.

On Ko-Fi, free for anyone to read (From the November Prompt Call)

My friends!

The theme this month for my Patreon is “Finish It!”

Which means, if you have wanted me to finish something, if you want me to write more about things, if you think I have too many cliffhangers, if you’ve been thinking about sending me a couple bucks in my tip jar,

now is a great month to join my Patreon at the $5 (prompt-me, “To-Do List”) level.

Yes, even if you only want to join for a month.  I won’t tell anyone 😉 That’s still $5 (less fees) for me!

Bonus:  If you join and prompt, I will write to one of your prompts, even if I’ve already written the 4 stories for that month.

Yes, it’s a loophole to get me to write even more finishes (or semi-finishes, let’s be honest).  But to do that – you gotta Patronize (the capital P is important in this case; if you lower-case patronize me I don’t write nothing) me and you have to prompt (on the “Prompt Call” post, please).

Check it out: https://www.patreon.com/aldersprig.

The poll has spoken!  Friendship is not only magic, it will be the theme of February's Patreon!

https://www.patreon.com/aldersprig

I'm looking forward to some fun prompts for this month.

If you have some good ideas, now is a great time to wander over and join up at the $5 "To-do-list" level (where you get to sneak ideas onto my to-do list) or higher; since I'm about to go fix a broken pipe, might be a good time for the "toolbox and recipe box" level and since I'm on a map kick, you might enjoy the Map Case tier.

Too much?  Enjoy all the stories at the $1 level!

Once a month, I do these polls.

I like polls a lot; they sometimes surprise me but often tell me where I'm going in re. what my readership wants.

The point of this poll in particular is to determine what I’ll be writing for my month in Patreon. This covers two very short stories, two long stories, some reposts, some meta, and whatever else comes to mind.

And no matter if you're a Patron or not, if you read my stuff or not, you can vote.

No DreamWidth account? Leave me your vote in the comments - up to 7 votes for the first question any any suggestions you want for the next three months' themes. I like it if you sign those comments, that's all.

Well, technically, yes. But there are always free posts. And many stories are made public after a while.

The theme was Return of the Light.

The new stories in theme:

Bring Back the Sun
They had done all the rituals in the days leading up to the solstice and the long night vigil of remembrance on the night itself.  They had lit the candles and sung the songs, they way their people had been doing since that horrible night so many lifetimes ago.

aldersprig: a red-heded freckled girl, smiling (Autumn)

A long time ago, M.C.A. Hogarth posted something in her LJ about tropes she’d like to see. One of them – which I have tried more than once to write – was about the young male (it might have been a mage?) recruiting the older female fighter?
Anyway, I was looking through my archives and I found this first chapter, or so, of Fiametta, a Strand-Worker living up on the top of a mountain.
⛰️
There were those who had called Fiametta cruel. Back when her hair was still red, more than one man had accused her of enjoying the pain of others. She’d never denied it, finding that a simple smile made them far more uncertain than any argument would, and so had a reputation as a bit of a wicked woman.
She remembered, fondly, her favorite of those complaints…

Everyone gets their inspiration from somewhere; every setting has its seeds in something.
Stranded - well, Autumn - came out of the book Blue Highways.

According to Wikipedia, this book came out in 1982. I don’t think I read it that early at all - I would’ve been six - but someone recommended it to my father, and I read it. I was probably in my early teens.

Those of them who could walk, who could carry a pack, who wanted to live, had banded together and headed for the hills.

The Grigori would not listen to her.

Natela was not particularly surprised.  For one, the Grigori rarely listened to anyone who was not Grigori, and although she had their blood, she was not of them, but by their standards.

Kailani and Rozen were being followed.

Not exactly followed — more like followed-in-front-of — and not by a person or people.  Rozen would have been able to deal with people.

Hello, Friends!

This is the time of month where I ask anyone who might have an interest in my Patreon to vote in the poll for this month’s theme.

The theme, which can be an extant setting, a motif, or a type of story, determines both the main four stories of the month (two very short and two “flash”) and the mid-week reposts for the month.

As this is Lexember, I will also come up with one or two lexicon entries for whichever setting wins.

If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, you can vote (for up to five options on Q1) in the comments.

In apple season, we make this an average of once a week.  As a matter of fact, we just diced up a whole bunch of apples, dipped ‘em in lemon-juice-water, and stored them in the freezer (Chinese soup containers) with the sugar needed for four of these cakes.

The snow kept falling.

The clear-sky thing hadn’t lasted for more than a few hours; now the sun struggled to be seen through thick layers of cloud cover, and the flakes fell and fell and fell.

Originally posted Oct. 15, 2011. This is a story of Baram. Actually… I’m going to put in a bit from Addergoole: TOS first. Warning: discussions of death, violence. 👹

“That hairdo took a long time,” [Shahin] told [Baram], sounding blandly irritated, “and you’ve messed it all up.” It gave her time to peel off a glove – the long sleeves of her widow’s weeds would still cover her wrists – and rest her hand on his forearm.

This is a weird one.  Today’s Patreon Sum-up involves three stories I wrote, not to prompts, but because they appeared to me.  All crossovers of one sort or another.

Okay, so I’m working on my outlines for Finish It nanowrimo coming up in, well, November.  And I got to the one for Facets of Dusk and I started thinking about – well, the doors they might open

🚪

“Get us someplace with medical care!” Simon shouted.
“Someplace with advanced technomagical medical care.”  Aerich’s aristocratic snarl sounded panicked.
“Someplace they’re not going to shoot at us.”  Cole’s voice was calm.  But Cole, who had Josie in his arms, also sounded serious.

I blame this on my current marathon re-read of the Sandman comics.

On Halloween, 2011, when the walls between worlds were thinner than they had ever been, the woman called The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (because her Mentor had been fond of Robert Heinlein, in his day and in her day) left her kids with her sister, as per their arrangement, and slipped out between those world-barriers.

Okay, I guess the theme is really talking to me this month.

Here’s another bonus, spurred on but not really related to a line from a Popular Mechanics article I read last night: (paraphrase) “AI is going to make the Industrial Revolution look small.”

🤖

Autumn knew better than to grab the strands of the world too much around Hallowe’en.
Everything was thinner at that time, more responsive, more willing to bend and twist and open.

The poll has spoken!

The walls between the worlds are thin in October, especially as Hallowe’en approaches.  It’s easier to step between universes – or to slip and fall down a rabbit-hole you were never expecting.

This month’s theme is Crossovers –  those slips, those falls, those determined steps into another world.

I mentioned a story about renovations…

🔨

The renovations started in June.

They closed on the house in October — Judy had a feeling about the place; Steve thought it had good bones — and lived with the ugly panelling, the wonky ceilings, the strange toilet all winter long.

As soon as the weather was consistently warm, down came the hideous paneling.

The Aramob had not been expecting resistance when they went against the Village. Town people were soft, and folded easily. That was the wisdom of the elders, that was what the young warriors preached. Especially water-towns, where their food came easy and they could waste their time in games.
