These two may not have the healthiest relationship in the school, and Zita's got a more than fair point about being tricked into the collar, but I would not call it a genuinely *bad* keeping. If anything, it's good for both of them, if... skewed, because Zita and Eris are who they are.
Poor Leo, was he getting a read on Zita's Change-related need for stability, or the wobbliness of a still-healing, traumatized Eris spilling over, or what? And agreed, Zita, frak Eriko. Well, so to speak. :P
Truly bad Keepings? Thessaly and Lucian Keeping Illian, though that comes chronologically later than this interlude. What Eris went through. What Callista went through. Poor Joff. Ahouva's time with Kendon. Bowen, Kendra, Leo with Eriko. Akaterina with Agravain. Ceinwen with Thorburn, for much of the time. Even Abednego with Rafe, currently (storywise), if only because Rafe seems determined enough to stop Abe from becoming a monster that he's started doing dark work himself, in service of a not-evil goal. ... Sorry, I got musing and quite a list came out.
Where I was going was, really, that these two seem more the no-fault broken sort of dysfunctional than the evil sort, tricking into a collar aside, because yeah, Zita has a beyond fair point there. I freely admit I'm inclined to read positives where there might not be many here; I <3 Zita, because tiny ferocious adorable maybe not entirely sane goblin healerlady, and I also like Eris. But *looks downthread* it gets worse? Eep? Oh frak.
Okay, I was just worried I wasn't writing very clearly - that sounds like we're on the same page. Eris and Zita are both likeable people, and you're absolutely right that it's dysfunctional, not evil.
(I am glad you like Zita!)
PS. As you've probably seen in Year 9, it also gets better after getting worse. Onwards!
Oh whew! I was afraid I'd ticked off the character's creator there, which I do not want to do! We're on the same page--whew.
Yes, thank goodness for things getting far better in year 9 and, clearly, well before year 9. Also after year 9, I hope; I'm responsible for that Zita and Amantia friendship commission, if that tells you anything.
I still love the idea of Zita and Amantia keeping in contact after they both graduate. Poor Amantia's much less free to move, thanks to circumstance, than Boom, but the two writing letters/sending complicated enough air Workings back and forth... Yes? No? Chanter you're being weird again?
Zita is extremely high social scores, she keeps in touch with everyone, at least until the apocalypse hits when it gets tricky. Zita does not have so many blood relatives she likes that she can lose one.
