The Lost Buildings encompassed what had once been the pride of the University.  They were tall and glorious, stately, and done in the Pecerin style of architecture that nobody seemed to be able to imitate anymore.

(Personally, Trenner thought it had something to do with the amount of opium Pecerin and her disciples had partaken of, but that had gotten her a few too many Hate Points in her architecture elective.)

Well, that could be the start of an intrepid band of chicken hunters and nest raiders. Or of a colony in the Lost Buildings. (If some of the other plantings are as useful as raspberries, they might have the start of a food garden?) Or any number of other things, really.

I've heard of people going to great lengths, or taking great risks, for various delicacies. Fugu comes to mind, or civet coffee — I've tried neither. I'm not sure if living where there are giant killer chickens counts as crazier than fugu eaters, but it's definitely up in the same vicinity.

Maybe, just maybe, if one or both of them bring back a chicken or two, they can actually get the eggs with much less risk?

I like that Trenner's response is good: bring the gun around, but don't actually fire. I'm not sure that can be called instinct, though. Training, perhaps? Or perhaps just reaction.

I still have to wonder about how the various religious symbols are going to be useful.
