The gate was still terrifying. Mélanie felt far too relieved by Jesper’s hand on her leg and the warmth of him pressed against her side. She needed it; she was fighting against panic with every step the horses took.

The horses didn’t seem to mind at all. She found that reassuring. They walked through the creepy, terrifying gate, waited placidly while Jasper closed the gate behind them and locked it, and headed cheerfully towards what seemed to all appearances to be a half-collapsed stone stable and carriage house.

Wow, he's really trying to take care of her. I wonder how long before she believes it. I suspect she's waiting for the other shoe to drop. So'm I, actually, but we'll see how that plays out. I'm glad that the horses were fine with going in, and that she could read horse well enough to tell that. (I'm not sure I could, having had almost no experience with horses. Dog? Sure. Parrot? Probably. Horse? Um...)

Meanwhile: she's had a bath, she has well-made warm clothes, and she has soup. So far, the soup makes sense. Maybe the rest of it will soon?

He really is trying to take care of her, and I finally figured out what the shoes were.

Horses have very expressive ears, and also the way they walk… I was better with animal body language than human in high school.

Soup makes sense!
