Mom Cara shed her white suit, revealing herself to be still rather like herself.  “Not everyone has extreme visible changes. I run a few degrees colder than I used to, and I tend to be a little quicker to fly off the handle if I don’t pay attention, but I still look much like myself.  And I’m still myself, Kelly-boop.  I promise.”

“I believe you.”  Nobody had called her Kelly-boop in years.  She found herself wrinkling her nose the same way she had back then, before she found out that it would end more quickly than she’d thought.

I'm now very curious about the other places that someone might end up as they come through the testing, particularly if the person does poorly on the testing. I'm guessing Kelly ended up in a good spot, and her mom did too, if she got to (arrange to?) be there when Kelly came through.

This still has a remarkable feel of Logan's Run to it, though with an other-side rather than execution at the cutoff age. I'm surprised that Down Under hasn't gone Lord of the Flies, but there's enough of an age range that it may be less of a problem. I'm guessing the adults sent down initially also helped stabilize and establish things.

When I get back to this story, we WILL see where someone who doesn’t do well on the testing ends up <.<

Kelly and that mom at least definitely ended up in good places.

Logan’s run?

Did I ask you that last time?

Logan's Run started off as a dystopian book where the maximum allowable age was 21, at which point you either reported in for execution or were hunted down. The movie changed that to age 30, but kept the societal concept the same.

Here, there's the testing instead of a Sleepshop, but with at least a similar effect (on the society Down Under) of removing anyone past a certain age.

And looking at that, do you want Down Under or Down Below? I'd go with Down Below to avoid connoting Australia.
