They broke their fast the next morning as a group, none of them wanting to separate.  There was a small whiff of fear in the air, and the quiet knowledge that their stories might mean the difference between wealth and failure, between life and death.  

They walked quietly from there to the auditorium, where those with the low numbers had already gathered inside.  The rest of them — their little group included — would wait outside, in long lines snaking back and forth around what had been, at one point, a parking lot.

They passed a bottle of wine, and then their tale-teller began his story anew.
