I am starting to suspect that the house is a particularly dire Change. Or is it some other mechanism to give a house both sentience and gender?

She doesn't seem to mind too much. I hope that's acceptance or similar, instead of a veneer of calm.

And I am unsurprised to find her being fond of Mélanie. I wonder how that'll work out with Jasper, assuming Mélanie can rescue him.
