I like that line about wizards and reading. Mandatory reading is one of those things that would likely pall after a while. That said, speaking as someone who has degrees in two fields that require vast amounts of reading — computer science and law — it hasn't palled yet. So maybe not? But with the usual extended wizard lifespan, who knows.
