a story for my New Year’s Prompt Call

It was January Third.

I remember because nobody was hungover but work wasn't really getting back to normal yet - not the second but not the fifth, that sort of thing?

I am put in mind of rosemary, which can flower in winter and can have purple flowers. Doesn't otherwise sound like this shrub, though. Privet does flower, though the varieties I've met have white flowers.

I plucked a flower; it smelled sweet, the way most flowers don’t to me (long story)
Terrible dangling plot threads. :-P

It does! I no longer have a rosemary plant, as one spring I "cleverly" put it out on the balcony so it would get more sun (all the rest of my potted plants like moderate light), and then forgot to water it. :( But before that I'd had it inside for a couple of years, and one winter it flowered tiny adorable purple flowers (which was extra-surprising because, while I knew it was really in the mint family, it'd been a present dressed up as a tiny christmas tree, so I thought of it as a miniature fur tree or somesuch).

... I miss it and keep thinking about replacing it, and then feel guilty about that one.

Garden elves! And there are winter-flowering plants: hellebores come immediately to mind. But garden elves!

I'm glad to see one showing herself to a passerby, and one who gives fair warning to those who are polite and appreciative. I'm amused to see the vague attempt at looking like someone who actually belongs in the university — the sweatshirt — while not actually looking like someone who belongs there to anyone who bothers to look.

That fight above sounds like it's going to be a doozy of a cold snap. Maybe a blizzard or freezing rain, too. Sounds like a fine day to be indoors.
