"I've got the vet ready," Stone agreed, "and every cat carrier anyone in the family could provide. I also have a list of friends and relatives who'd be willing to foster a cat."

Janelle had to admit, most of the time she spent around her husband's family left her feeling lost and overwhelmed, as well as out-classed and relegated to the kid's table for no reason she really understood. Owen never really tired to explain as much as he shrugged and said, "that's how things are in my family." Janelle, who came from a single mother who hardly talked to her parents, was as lost about that as everything else, but Owen had made it clear early on that one accepted his family or one moved on. The last bitch had moved on. Janelle had been determined to stay.

Beryl-modern-era. After What to do about Auntie X (LJ) and Cleaning House (LJ)


Beryl, Stone, and Chalce spent the day - along with Stone's friend Jake, with the truck (and also some amazing blue eyes) - distributing Aunt Beatrix's cats among family and friends. They had agreed with Aunt Beatrix that three was a reasonable number for her to keep, and then agreed with her that they'd stop in once a month to check on her and her cats.

Evangaline was doing interesting things.

They'd had a feeling she would, of course. She was strong, had always been strong, hadn't fought the spark, the way some of them do, did, and she was still young. It helped to come into it young.

Rosaria approved. Asta had been an engaging woman, certainly, but she hadn't been that flexible. They'd felt, not that any of them would have said so, that she was filling the time, filling the place until her successor was ready. And now that Evangaline was there, well...

...she was shaking things up a bit.

"And your hands are shaking." She paid no heed to the voice; if she turned to look, the darn tomcat would be grooming himself or something. "The caster must be as strong as the casting."

"You're not helping," she snarled. "You're making me angry."

"And what is it you are trying to make?" He sounded, today, like a man in his fifties. Sometimes he sounded like a child. He was always rather irritating.
