Comes after Consequences by at least a few days.
"I don't know what to do," Thorburn grumbled into his beer. "I feel like a bull in a china shop."
"Tell me about it." Basalt downed his own drink. "Or don't. I think I finally figured out Ahouva, but it took some doing. She agreed to date me."
"Agreed..." Thorburn set down his glass carefully. They'd been drinking for a while; he wasn't sure how long anymore. "You Own her, Basalt."
"And Kendon Owned her, and that didn't make what he did any better. He nearly ruined her."
He was too drunk to twitch and too polite to break Basalt's shit, so he settled for glaring at the floor. "It's part of Keeping," he muttered uncomfortably. "Part of being Kept."
"Only if you want it to be. Shit, Thor, you're not..."
"I'm not a monster!" he flared. "Even if she thinks I am. I'm not! But you have to be in control. You have to be boss. And know you're boss. The Bond doesn't give you another option."
There was a long silence while both of them stared at their beer. "You're in control," Basalt agreed. "Nobody can take that away from you, Thor. You can act however YOU want."
Not how Indigo wants you to act.

He stumbled home later, muttering a Working to take off the worst edge of the booze, trying not to think about Indigo, or Ceinwen, or bruises. Really trying not to think about bruises.
The girls were staying with a friend; by now, Basalt had called them. Ceinwen would be back soon. Thorburn washed out his mouth, and looked around the room. What did he want to be like? How did he want to act?
What would make her stop hating him?
It was too late, she was coming in.
"Sssen..welln," he tried.
She stopped in the doorway. "You're drunk."
"Close t'door. Very drunk. I've been thinking..."
She didn't say that's new, but her face said it clearly enough. "Thinking?" she asked cautiously.
"An' drinking," he allowed. "But thinking... about you. And about her."
"Her. Indigo?"
He shouldn't have been surprised she knew the name, but he was. "Basalt tell you?"
"Curry." She leaned against the door. "You're not happy when you're thinking about her."
"That's why the drinking. I think..." He sat down with a hump on the bed. "I don't like thinking about her. And I think about her when I think about Keeping." He picked up the beer. "This... helps."
"Maybe..." Ceinwen hadn't yet moved from the door. "...I could help more?"
