So I freecycled 2 short (3'?) particleboard shelving units, thinking I could make a kitten tower from them, but they're not going to work for that.

They neither match each other nor anything else in the house, not even my other particalboard shelving. And I'd like to do something towards having matching stuff, not the other direction.

Other than repainting them, does anyone have an idea for upcycling these shelves?

Hmmmm, that's a tough one! Particleboard isn't really the most versatile material.

Well here's my brainstorming - some (most?) are probably not applicable to your situation, but hey!

- Pantry shelving
- Turn them into tables! Flip them face-down or cut them apart, put a table cloth over them.
- On a similar line, cushion the backs or tops and and staple fabric or leather over them, making footstools. (If you do it right, you can still store things inside.)
- Workshop storage
- Ceiling light fixtures? (I am not sure how that would work, haha.)
- Cut some semicircle holes (big enough for felines to crawl through) in the top or sides, and shelves, to make it sort of like a cat-cave. (Cut out a couple small holes in the shelving back for light/paws if desired.)

I think I am out of ideas for right now.

And with the cat-cave thing, you can drop toys into it and put things on top and they can act as impromptu cat-toy hiding places/storage!

Also you can cover the sides and/or top in scratching-post material for additional multipurposing!
