I blogged a year or two ago about a blogger who posted Food Waste Fridays. I can't find the link right now, but I've just found this article from heifer.org.

(Ah, here: Food Waste Friday)

We don't waste a lot of food, and what we do, we usually compost. But it still bothers me.

Do you have any tricks for minimizing food waste in your house?

Food waste is actually something I can't let myself think about, or I get really neurotic and obsessive and . . . end up depressed, eating out constantly and, um, wasting more food. e.e

"Not wasting" food for me is way too tied up with really pathological eating habits (including forcing myself to eat way more than I want and then alternately not eating at all because I'm afraid if I buy food I'll "waste" it) and pathological buying habits. Ironically, I waste less food and eat better when I refuse to think about wasting food.

Well, it's not my house, and my mother tends to get miffed when I ask about these things, but I think what should help would be regularly going through the fridge and storage shelves to see what needs using up, and then doing so.

Also, not procrastinating on cooking that cabbage soup until the cabbage goes moldy.

I suspect you do that already.
