Meme: Crossover
Jul. 2nd, 2014 02:40 pmPick one:
Either a character from fandom entersone of my settings Tír na Cali, or a character(or archtype) from one of my settings Tír na Cali is transported into a fandom 'verse.
(e.g., Derek Morgan ends up in Tír na Cali, or a Californian born-slave ends up in the Potter'verse.)
and I'll write at least three sentences of the crossover.
My fandoms include:
Harry Potter
Criminal Minds
Leverage
Almost Human
Dr. Who (mostly new-series, can fake the old stuff)
Supernatural (through Season 5 so far)
Eureka
I'm sure I have others - ask and I'll say yea or nay

Date: 2014-07-13 10:51 pm (UTC)"Oh, good." Her voice was high and soft, and she didn't seem so much startled to see Mistrye as she did vaguely pleased. "A blue-striped tigrinar. I thought you were all extinct."
Mistrye coughed. "As you say, your ladyship." As far as she was aware, she was the only, ah, blue-striped tiger Moddie in existence. That was close enough to extinct, she supposed.

Date: 2014-07-04 05:18 am (UTC)Somewhat off-topic but:
A Harry Potter fan eh? Do you read Harry Potter fanfiction? Do you have any you'd particularly recommend? Would you like some recommendations?
A shame Almost Human was canceled. But really, a good sci fi show on fox? Of course it was going to be canceled. I don't know why fox even bothers with sci fi, since it's obvious they don't know what to do with it.
What did you think of Matt Smith's run? I thought he got off to a bit of a shaky start but made the role his own by the end. Tennant is still my favorite, but then he'll be the bar to beat for a long, long time I think.
Eureka was a fun show. A shame it got canceled, but it had a good run. And they were reaching for plots there at the end.
Cheers.

Date: 2014-07-04 02:58 pm (UTC)* it's been a while since I read any Harry Potter fanfic, though back in the "gods when will the next book come out" times I read lots and lots and lots. I'd love recs; I always love recs on good fic.
* Fox + Sci fi, yes, sigh, but I enjoy it when I can, esp. when it's a show that I can enjoy with the spousal unity.
* I was up and down on Matt Smith. I'm an Eccleston fan all the way, and some of the writing in 11's seasons got in the way of me enjoying him. OTOH, I really liked Amy.
* And yeah, I really, really liked Eureka. A lot. I think the reach might have been in part the cancelling upcoming?

Date: 2014-07-05 01:35 am (UTC)I went down through my reams and reams of HP fics and listed below some of the ones that really stuck with me.
Prince of the Dark Kingdom
Author's summary: Ten years ago, Voldemort created his kingdom. Now a confused young wizard stumbles into it, and carves out a destiny. AU. Nondark Harry. MentorVoldemort.
KN's comment: This is well researched and well written. An interesting take on a more well rounded Voldemort and an exploration of what would have happened if Voldemort had won the first war.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
Author's summary: Petunia married a biochemist, and Harry grew up reading science and science fiction. Then came the Hogwarts letter, and a world of intriguing new possibilities to exploit. And new friends, like Hermione Granger, and Professor McGonagall, and Professor Quirrell...
KN's comment: This is one of the most fun and entertaining fics I've ever read, as well as one of the most intelligent. Pretty much everyone but McGonagall and possibly Hermione are pretty heavily OOC but it's so entertaining that you don't mind.

Harry Potter and the Elder Sect
Author's summary: When Hagrid arrives at the Potter cottage in Godric's Hollow, he finds no sign of Harry Potter. It takes five long years for Harry to be found, in the care of a distant cousin, having been dropped off by his Great Grand Mother.
KN's comment: this is an amusing romp exploring what if Harry was raised by Samantha and Darrin Stephens (of Bewitched) with comparable powers and then ends up going to Hogwarts. Nothing serious here, just a fun exploration of a kinda silly concept.

Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past
Author's summary: The war is over. Too bad no one is left to celebrate. Harry makes a desperate plan to go back in time, even though it means returning Voldemort to life. Now an 11 year old Harry with 30 year old memories is starting Hogwarts. Can he get it right?
KN's comment: If you were anywhere in the Harry Potter fanfiction community in the last 10 years then you've likely already at least heard of this one, if not already read it. It's one of the greats. And one of the best Peggy-sue fics ever.

Harry Potter and the Wastelands of Time and it's sequel Harry Potter and the Heartlands of Time
Author's summary: Take a deep breath, count back from ten… and above all else – don't worry! It'll all be over soon. The world, that is. Yet for Harry Potter the end is just the beginning. Enemies close in on all sides, and Harry faces his greatest challenge of all - Time.
KN's comment: This is a great Groundhog Peggy Sue fic. Very epic feeling. Good characterization, great action, compelling plot.

Hell Eyes
Author's summary: Harry was born cursed, but didn't know until he fell through a portal to another world. There people have wings and hate him for his curse, but it gives him power: power to change this new world as well as his own. AU after 5th year.
KN's comment: I don't really know what to say about this one. It's very well written, but not very Harry Potter. *shrug*
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2686394/1/Hell-Eyes
Make A Wish
Author's summary: Harry has learned the prophesy and he does not believe that a schoolboy can defeat Voldemort, so he decides that if he is going to die then he is first going to live.
KN's comment: This is a Rorschach's Blot fic. If you've been active in fanfiction of the fandom back in the day you may recognize his name. He's notorious for writing well-written, internally consistent stories based around very AU premises, without ever explaining why the characters decided to go that route rather then canon. This is one of the few that gets around that problem by having the characterization changes be externally motivated rather then his usual internal. It's a fun romp that doesn't take itself too seriously. Worth a read especially when you need alittle humor.

A Stranger in an Unholy Land and it's sequel A Stranger in the Promised Land
Author's summary: Days before his 6th year, Harry Potter is sucked into another universe by forces not of this world. Dazed and confused, Harry finds himself in a world where his parents are alive, where Voldemort has never fallen and he is Voldemort's key enforcer
KN's comment: This one is a hellofa read. Very well written. I don't really know what else to say about it that the summary doesn't already say.

Harry Potter and the Years of Rebellion
Author's summary: YoR is an epic reimagination of Harry's story, beginning with the summer after OotP and plotted through his final encounter with Voldemort and beyond. It spans the wizarding and Muggle worlds and is at once dramatic, comic, tragic, political, and a host of other things. It's long, wordy and at times challenging to read, and often times things are not as they seem - consider yourself warned. This was begun in 2003, so it is very much post-OotP: no horcruces, no hallows, no Slug Club, no magical mystery tour of Voldemort's early life, etc., etc. The few tidbits that have been taken from HBP or DH (e.g. Snape's potions textbook) play out very differently here.
KN's comment: This is one of the best, independent!harry fics I've read. If that type interests you and you haven't already read this then it's well worth giving a shot.

Backwards Compatible
Author's summary: The war is over. Voldemort won. The light's last hope is a desperate ploy, concocted by an insane genius, that probably won't work anyway. Now Harry must find a way to win a war he's already lost once before.
KN's comment: This is another Peggy-Sue fic, though much less serious then Nightmare of futures past, a fun adventure.

Dance With Me Harry and it's sequel The Next Dance
Author's summary: During the summer after his fourth year, after Uncle Vernon beats Harry, the only thing that keeps him going is thinking about Hermione's kiss at the train station. But once the authorities intervene, he is sent to live among the Muggles, where he learns about life and love. But will this help him win Hermione's heart? Or will Voldemort strike first?
Kn's comment: This one is interesting for how it rounds out the magical world, as well as a well written and believable romance (not with Hermione despite the summary).

The Psychic Serpent trilogy
Author's summary (for the first book): In Harry's fifth year he gets a snake with the Sight. Hermione's torn between Ron and Harry, who's torn between her and Ginny, who's torn between him and Draco Malfoy, who's torn between her and loyalty to his father. Plus: a Prophecy, Animagus training, a Dueling Club, Snape's Penseive, kilts, giants, house elf liberation and more!
KN's comment: I can't honestly remember much about this one. I'm starting to get way back in my HP fic list here. I do remember that I really, really enjoyed it.

Date: 2014-07-11 01:52 pm (UTC)Whateley Academy: It is a collaboration between a dozen or so authors and is also about a school for superhuman teens, in this case mostly mutants a la Xavier’s school but on steroids. It’s a full on boarding school with about six hundred students and teaches regular classes along side such as magic, mutant powers theory and costume design. The world it’s set in is comic-like in many respects, with super-heroes and super-villains an accepted part of the world, but alittle more realistically handled then many aspects of todays comic books. The school itself is strictly neutral, so there are students that plan to be heroes, some that plan to be villains and many others who just want to learn to control their powers enough to function in everyday society. I will offer fair warning that Whateley Academy contains strong LBGTI elements, emphasis on the T and I, especially early on. But if you’ve gotten this far in Addergoole then it probably won’t bother you too much (those elements aren't too different from what we experienced with Jamian's arc). I’ll also warn that there is *alot* of material. For a comparison, I was able to read the entirety of Addergoole (Y5 and Y9) in about three days of intense reading. It took me three weeks of equally intense reading to get through all of Whateley, and that was when there was a fair bit less then there is now. We’re talking about 50 novel(la) length stories (100-500 pages) and over 200 more shorter works that range from 20-80 pages. About 5 million words all told (War and Peace is about 450 thousand words). If you’re looking for more information about the series before you commit, here’s the series’ TV Tropes page:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/WhateleyUniverse?from=Main.WhateleyUniverse
http://crystalhall.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Canon_Stories#
That’s a link to the wiki, which is the best most up to date source for stories. The first table you’ll find contains the primary stories. It defaults to chronological order which is the best way to read them with one exception. Chronologically Baker’s dozen and Silver Linings part 1 are first. But I would advise starting with Enter the Chaka and reading through to Welcome to Poe, then go back to read Baker’s dozen and Silver Linings part 1, then continue chronologically beyond Welcome to Poe.
The story is pretty much dead at this point. It was only one (very prolific) author keeping it alive for the last two or three years, but she's recently moved on to a different fandom. Though that's something you'll have long since gotten used to if you read fanfiction or web serials, and it's not like there isn't enough material to sink your teeth into.
Cheers.
