I recently came across these two posts on alternate ways of doing wordcount for NaNoWriMo:

and

I found them interesting, although possibly not-for-me (I like building in skip days, myself).

My own 60K is actually divided over 24 writing days and 6 off days (including a vacation in the middle). I'm curious to see how the actual writing goes.

Maybe I should look at my tracking data & see if months follow a flow patter.

If you NaNo, how do you divide up the 50,000? If you write, how do you work out your writing quota over time?

I don't explicitly build in skip days (except Thanksgiving) but I set a daily goal of 2k to give myself flexibility. At least, that's the idea... (Also, I like nice round numbers.)

The linked idea looks interesting but I would burn out the first week. (And it seems bad for developing habits.)

When I NaNo, I don't approach it in terms of wordcount , even though that does stay in my head to keep me on track a little, but rather I loo at it as a way to make myself spend time writing. I know that if I carve out a two hour block of time, I can get about 2.5k written assuming I know what I am working on.

So, instead of shooting for a word goal each day, I shoot for a time goal of about three hours. This si broken up through the day but I want to, at the end of the day, say I have spend three hours with my but in the chair and hands committing words.

Hmm, at first I was like "writing one word is not a reward! writing a lot is a reward!" but that second one actually sounds cool. Especially the mix-and-match wordcount days where you have a certain number of days with a certain wordcount. I might just have to try that.

Usually, though, I have a big 3k+ day on day 1, and then I continue to write above the required wordcount for the rest of the month ;)
