“In your own time, Shelby.” Professor Carver’s voice was level and soothing, but it did no good for the panicked butterflies in Shelby’s stomach. There was still the river raging in front of them – a creek, really, but a wide one, and swollen with the spring rains until it threatened to overflow its banks. The bridge, its timbers soaked to the saturation point, threatened to collapse with any weight at all, and the farmers needed it.

“As long as your time is in this century,” Cort muttered, just quietly enough to escape the Professor’s attention. Shelby swallowed and stared at the water.

The First Years had just finished the two-week long Selection process that the older students called Rush, filtering them to Mentors and Houses that would best suit them. They had finally gotten to sleep last night in a proper dorm, instead of the gymnasium. And now, when it had seemed the worst of it was over, clean robes, clean hair, warm socks… this.

“…roll your leg over, roll your leg over. Roll your leg over, it’s better… that… way.”

The pub sing had gone from bawdy to maudlin and now had settled back into a maudlin sort of bawdy, the last of them shutting down the bar with increasingly silly lyrics, remembered or made up on the spot, to an old favorite.

“If all the young ladies were big wooden stairs,” belted out Tiny Janice. The tourists were gone, and even most of the regulars. By tomorrow, the Shire would be an empty cluster of wooden pavilions, its denizens scattered to the four winds. “They’d go up mine, and I’d go up theirs.” A transient fellowship, they laughed like old friends with strangers they might never see again.
